The Los Angeles Chargers have officially welcomed Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach. Harbaugh, a former quarterback for the Chargers in the late 90s, is making a return after spending the last nine years as the head football coach at the University of Michigan.

During his tenure at Michigan, Harbaugh led the Wolverines to three consecutive Big Ten Championships, three College Football Playoff appearances, and an impressive 15-0 record, culminating in the 2023 National Championship.

Dean Spanos, the Owner and Chairman of the Board, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Jim Harbaugh is the epitome of football, and we believe there’s no one better to guide the Chargers into the future. President of Football Operations John Spanos highlighted Harbaugh’s track record of building winning teams, both in college and the NFL. Harbaugh boasts a remarkable 144-52 record as a collegiate head coach and a 49-22-1 record as an NFL head coach, including leading the San Francisco 49ers to three consecutive NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance.

Harbaugh is known for his ability to identify and develop talent. At Michigan, he coached nine players who eventually became first-round NFL draft selections. During his time with the 49ers, he coached 17 players to a combined 30 Pro Bowl selections, showcasing his knack for player development.

Upon his return to the Chargers, Harbaugh expressed his gratitude, stating, “Being back here feels like home, and it’s great to see that those things haven’t changed. The organization is committed to success, and we’re just getting started.”

Harbaugh’s coaching achievements extend beyond the gridiron. In his nine seasons at Michigan, he led the team to an impressive 86-25 record, with six seasons of 10 or more wins. The announcement also highlighted Harbaugh’s successful coaching career before Michigan, including turning around the Stanford University football program and leading the University of San Diego to a 29-6 record in three years.
